CARRIE
(Pocket, YA/Adult) is one of the first Stephen King books I read. The story is
about a young girl who uses her telekinetic powers to start a fire at her prom. The fire kills the high school classmates who have humiliated her and the
teachers who have stood by while she suffered.
While
there are many things about CARRIE that are troubling- a uber-religious lunatic
mother, school bullies, and being drenched in pig blood at prom- what drew my heaviest
sigh is Carrie's obliviousness to Sue's intent to be her friend until the
damage Carrie caused is irreversible. If Carrie knew Sue wanted her to go to
the prom with her boyfriend Tommy because Sue genuinely wanted to do something
nice for Carrie, I believe the ending of the story could've been different.
It is important for those who are drowning in loneliness and despair to know
someone cares.

I have not read Carrie, but I know about it. You make a great point about being depressed and knowing that someone cares. I have the same problem, but in the height of depression, we tend to forget that for some reason.
I've seen the movie. (Sadly, both versions. Skip the most recent one.) Is it really classified as a young adult novel?
I think The Stand was the first King novel I read, but I did read Carrie, too. I think Carrie was so beat down and troubled that she wouldn't/couldn't see the helping hand Sue was holding out for her. I do think Sue was trying to ease her own conscience a bit also.
I either love or hate King's books. Have not read carrie. Loved Pet Semetary (King purposely mispelled it). Hated Cujo. Loved the last third of The Shining as the first two thirds was data dump.
I love Carrie. I think many people who have been in her position have wished they could do something like this!

Carrie is a good one indeed. If I had such powers I'd have lots of fun. I think I'd go more Zapped than Carrie though lol
I've read just about everything King has written. Carrie was riveting. The movie starring Sissy Spacek was spot-on. True, it was troubling to think she just couldn't see through the deep despair that triumphed in the end. I would hope to not get 'carried' away if I had those powers;-)
Carrie is one of the many Stephen King novels that I've never read. (I don't count the fact that I saw the movie, of course!) I've read about a dozen, but it's impossible to keep up with an author who writes one per afternoon...
I've never read Carrie - only seen the original theme (think I read somewhere they're doing a remake?) And I wouldn't trust myself with powers of any kind!

That's one of my favorite Stephen King quotes! I read Carrie as a teen too, and I remember thinking the same thing about Sue. But I have to wonder, now, if Carrie would have believed Sue's overtures of friendship or not. When I was a kid, I thought it would be cool to be telekinetic, but now I think that I'd just put on a lot of weight. The primary exercise I get is getting up and down every 38 seconds to get something for my husband or pets (or something I forgot)!

Seems like an interesting read.
I think it was also the first Stephen King novel I read. It's funny now, because at the time he wrote it, the imaginary 1980s books and articles cited in the text were still in the future.
I've never read anything by Stephen King. It's a genre thing, although I do enjoy many of his adaptations on TV.
This was the first Stephen King book I read. A friend gave it to me-telling me I must read it~ I was hooked! I was dared to go to Stephen's house on Halloween, when I was in college. I am from Maine~ It was foggy and creepy and he has wrought iron spiders on his gate. I couldn't do it...lol
I loved reading about how he wrote this in his memoir, On Writing.

I have not read Carrie or any Stephen King novels. I have seen a few movies or shows based on his books. They always have a twist ending.
There has been a time when I was a kid that I read all of Stephen King's books. Carrie was the first I read an done of my favourites.
It's a strong story, not doubt about it. It would probably trouble me mor eif I read it today. But back then I just took it at face value and didnt' question it too much.
I felt for Carrie.

Carrie is a great one. I read a ton of Stephen King when I was young and loved it. I tried reading one of his recent novels a few years back and couldn't get into it at all, but I still love his early stuff. I don't know what I would do if I had Carrie's powers now at my age, but at her age, I probably would have been pretty destructive.
