GUTGAA 2012: Meet and Greet

So I signed up to participate in the Gearing Up to Get An Agent Blogfest hosted by Deana Barnhart. Thanks, Deana! The blogfest's first event is a meet and greet where we're supposed to answer the questions Deana had posted. So here I go:

Where do you write? I write out of my home office in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Quick. Go to your writing space, sit down and look to your left. What is the first thing you see? I see a recipe for chocolate mousse I found on the Internet. To the left of that is a notepad for all the lists I like to make. And to the left of that is an unopened CD-Rom for a bunch of poker games I've had for years.

Favorite time to write? I like to write at night when the kids are asleep.

Drink of choice while writing? I like water or tea. When the weather's cold, I like soup too. I'm a big soup person.

When writing , do you listen to music or do you need complete silence? I prefer listening to music or just having some subtle background noise. I particularly enjoy writing to instrumentals. I find the sound of complete silence distracting, for some reason.

What was your inspiration for your latest manuscript and where did you find it? I found inspiration for a PB manuscript I'm working on by observing the antics of fish in a pond. I get a lot of my inspiration from just observing stuff.

What's your most valuable writing tip? I don't know if I'd say this is the most valuable writing tip...but I'd encourage anyone who has a pie-in-the-sky dream to appreciate the journey and remember to smell the flowers.

Now here are some questions not on Deana's list that I made up for myself and visitors to answer, if they like:

What do you write? I am mainly focused on writing for the kidlit audience (PB, MG, and YA) although I am also considering writing a novel in the new adult genre too.
How are you spending your Labor Day weekend? I'm spending time with friends and family. While I would've liked to go on a short weekend trip, I just had a baby back in May and I'm staying very busy with new parenting duties.

What do you want to get out of GUTGAA this year? I would like to meet more writers/bloggers. At this time, I don't think I'd be pitching anything during this blogfest, but I'd still like to participate in as many events as I can.

Nice to meet you, Cynthis and thanks for stopping by my bog!

Congrats on the new baby. I miss those days! Mind you, when I was experiencing those early months of my daughters' lives, I couldn't wait to get OUT of that phase. Now I long for it. Hahahah! (My girls are 3 and 7.)

Oops, *Cynthia*. I see my fumble-fingers misspelled your name. Sorry!

Mara Valderran said...

Nice to meet you! Congrats on the new baby! I love the title of your blog. Very clever! :) What genre do you tend to write? Fantasy? Contemporary? One of my goals is to connect with more writers as well, so I hope to see you around!

Our Labor day is mostly yard work. Hubby has the day off so we're trying to finish some projects. Hope your day is great!

I love the idea of a fish PB. I would buy that!

Hi, Cynthia! Excited to be a part of GUTGAA. Hope to get to know you and your writing during this month.

Cynthia, thanks for stopping by my blog! Yes, people I don't even know will attempt to speak formally when I tell them I'm an English teacher.
I'd love to answer the rest of your questions. I write YA, I'm being lazy with my hubby for Labor Day (he has a cold), and I also want to meet new writers and maybe find a new critique partner. Good luck with your writing!

Cynthia, so nice to meet you! Our things-in-common is a little eerie, even!

And while you did some school in the Central Valley, I did some school in the North Bay. Like we switched for a few years.

Congrats on new mommy-hood. Get ready for time to fly by always does when your first baby is little. *sigh*

I write mostly YA and NA. I'm doing GUTGAA mostly for networking as my MS isn't quite ready. I love meeting new people who understand what it's like to have to get a story out.

Cynthia said...

Jeanmarie: Nice meeting you too! I'm cherishing all the little moments with my baby because I know I will indeed miss these days when he's older.

Mara: I write both contemporary and fantasy. Truth is, I haven't really found my niche yet.

S.P.: I hope you got to finish your projects yesterday!

Alleged Author: That's awesome!!

Dawn: Hope to get to know you too!

Jenna and Ashley: I hope your husband is feeling better! Very cool to meet another YA author!

Cynthia said...

Beth: So neat how we have stuff in common! I haven't been to school in Central Valley though.

Marcy: Thanks!!

Tara: Thanks!!

Kelley: Yay for YA!

Melodie: This is actually my second one, but I totally know what you mean. =)

Diana: I'm interested in writing NA too, so I hope to learn more about you!

Hey Cynthia, thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm pretty jealous of your banner BTW.

At this stage I'm not sure if I'll be pitching anything yet either but it's a lot of fun meeting so many new people.

Hi Cynthia! I just subscribed to your blog, too! So, to answer your questions:

I write MG and will be pitching my completed MG magical realism novel.

My in-laws came for the weekend but left before actual Labor Day. We spent yesterday at the Japanese Festival as the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Like you, I hope to meet other writers. I love that this Meet and Greet and some other activities are part of GUTGAA. However, I'd also like to get an agent, and I figure all the exposure I can get is good.

Thanks for sharing!

Yay for water drinkers!!! And I have a hard time working in silence too... I think I like something with movement to keep me moving too. :)

I love fall weather and soup. Thanks for the reminder to smell the flowers and enjoy the journey. I need to celebrate small writing victories -- a contest final, a finished MS etc. :)

I'm a big soup person too. Rainy weather brings it out in me the most. :) Good luck with GUTGAA!

Hi, I'm here from GUTGAA! I love your statement about observing fish. I think you nailed what writers are: incredible observers.

Congrats on the new baby! My "baby" had his first day of kindergarten today. I also write YA.

Cynthia said...

Heather: It is indeed fun to meet other writers.

Michelle: Good luck with pitching your MG novel!

Lynn: As the weather gets colder, I don't think either of us would need to be reminded to have more soup. =)

Kristin: H20 woot woot!

Stephanie: The stuff you mentioned sound like big victories to me!

Jeannette: Good luck to you too!

Ruth: It is fun to learn more about other people.

RAD-Dot Painter: My introvert side allows me to be a good observer.

Jessica: Thanks, and I hope your child had a great first day of school!

Congrats on the new baby:) What a fun time. It's nice to meet you. Please, stop by and say hello if you haven't already.

Congrats on the new baby! I miss those new baby days. My babies are 1 and 2 and 8 and 9 now and while I don't miss getting up in the middle of the night and I'll be glad to see the diapers go, there's something about a new baby...And here comes the baby fever! :)

Have fun with GUTGAA!

Great blog! I'm SUCH a soup person! Years ago I worked at Barnes and Noble's cafe and we made soup every day and I became a total soup fiend. :) Best of luck in GUTGAA!

Triona said...

Mmmm, soup... I'm definitely going to try putting some in a cup beside my laptop when it gets colder! You reminded me how much I like it :-)

And I totally agree about observing. I think way too many people get caught up in their own stuff and don't pay enough attention to the world around them.

Hi Cynthia! Checking in from GUTGAA - you know, I've only been to the SanFrancisco Bay area once, but it was beautiful - stayed in Half Moon Bay for a writer's retreat. That place alone is inspired for writing!! Nice to meet you ~ :)

I know it's getting late but I'm still checking out as many GUTGAA blogs as I can. Love your banner and your title really stood out in the linky thing. Good luck with your writing endeavors

It's so true that we need to enjoy the NOW of the writing/publishing journey. Because no matter where we get, there's always further to travel to a new dream or rung on the ladder. But finding the joy in the now is critical to true happiness. By no means to I do this well, but I'm working on it!!! Nice to get to know you more. :-)
