Sometimes it's entertaining to see the way pop culture portrays the life of a writer. In an older episode of Family Guy, Brian, the family dog, writes a self-help book to follow a publishing trend. The book becomes an instant bestseller. An overnight celebrity author, Brian becomes a total prick and is brought back to earth after he gets ripped apart on Real Time with Bill Maher.

Unlike Brian, I do not aspire to write a bestseller. I just want to write a book that would find an audience, even if it's a small audience.

I agree. If I ever do write a book, which I hope I will, I will be happy if the few people who read it enjoyed it :)

Same here, I just want someone to connect with my story the way I do. Of course if it makes a lot of money I won't object.
I loved your blog title when I saw it on the list, so I had to come visit. I have to admit, I've never been a fan of Family Guy. It seems like a show I'd like, but I've tried a number of times and it's never clicked. But I do laugh/sigh at the way most shows and movies completely get the life of a writer completely wrong.
Wishing you continued success with the A to Z challenge,
Jocelyn
Ooh I might watch that one this evening :) I love it when they put cartoons into real tv show, something about the way it looks just intrigues me!

I'm with you on the being happy finding a small audience. Publishing is not what it used to be, and I'll be satisfied just getting that done, someday!
I used to watch Family Guy years ago, but I don't remember this episode. I do remember Brian frequently saying he was writing a novel, and Stewie teasing him by asking when it's done yet. :)
Haha, loved Family Guy. Brian was hilarious, though Stuey was my favorite of course. Great post and happy A-Z blogging.
We can't watch this show anymore, our 6 year old picks up too much.
Brian and Stewie were my favorite.

don't have the desire to go after being published
I hate that I laugh at this show because it's frequently offensive and obnoxious, but Brian is pretty awesome. Just seeing that pic of him on Bill Maher is making me laugh.
Brian is a BRAVE pooch to go on Bill Maher.
Yeah, usually when a TV character writes a book, it becomes a bestseller and they go on book tours and TV and such, which is far from the typical reality of publishing.
Just like every TV lawyer gets fascinating important cases rather than just writing up contracts, and TV doctors deal with emergencies and exotic diseases rather than routine shots and flus and high blood pressure cases.
Funny. I love when tv shows do things like this. I think my favorite was when the Simpsons did one with Neil Gaiman
Writers on TV never seem to need to revise or edit do they?
Thanks for commenting on my post, everyone! The life of a writer is often portrayed as being more glamorous on TV and in the movies than what I believe it really is for most of us. But I still find this stuff entertaining to watch. =)
